Ice Safety Tools

Qikiqtarjuaq

Working closely with the Community Management Committee in Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet), self-named Sikumiut, SmartICE team members Dr. Katherine Wilson and Andrew Arreak collaborated with community knowledge holders to develop a suite of locally relevant ice travel safety tools.

Drawing on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and generations of experience travelling on the land and sea ice, these resources document seasonal travel routes, areas of concern, sea ice terminology, place names, and other important information used by community members. Together, they serve as practical tools for safer travel while supporting the preservation and transfer of local knowledge.
